Goh Swee Kee Restaurant

I happened to be talking to a Penang native at a work event, and I mentioned that I was going to Penang. She said I absolutely had to visit this restaurant which was her favourite restaurant growing up, and she still visits it each time she’s back in Penang.

I love local recommendations, hence I put it on my itinerary. It was a small, old-school, very homely Teochew restaurant.

We had been eating about five meals a day so we didn’t order a lot – mostly some kid-friendly dishes, like fish balls seaweed soup and tofu.

Garlic prawns and pork ribs were both good, but my favourite was the prawn balls! Fresh and juicy prawns wrapped in beancurd skin and deep fried ❤️❤️

We ordered the beancurd for the kids. There are many other dishes I would have liked to try, particularly the spicy curry ones, but that will have to wait until the girls are much older and less picky about food.

The menu looks very appetising.

The restaurant, like many others in Georgetown, Penang, may take some walking and navigation to find. Georgetown is largely made up of low lying buildings, so if you’re not travelling by taxi, it will take some navigation. We didn’t mind because we really enjoyed exploring the many quiet streets of Penang, where we encountered many interesting street art and murals along the way.

Some more pictures of the menu for reference:

I would have liked to try the plum sauce chicken or the milky pepper chicken.

Or the oyster omelette!

These are their signatures! We got the prawn balls (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) and the friend beancurd (⭐⭐⭐⭐). While I don’t usually fancy oysters, their bean paste oyster looks interesting and I might try it if I have the chance to come back.

We picked two items from their popular dishes – the pork ribs and the seaweed soup. The spicy Assam curry and claypot Indonesia prawns look really good. Unfortunately the two girls don’t really like spice – they have a decent tolerance for spice, but unlike their brother, they don’t favour it.

Overall a very pleasant experience, and yet another successful recommendation from a local!
