Mr Dakgalbi – Mid Valley Southkey

We decided on an impromptu long weekend trip to Johor Bahru (JB), and we started making our way in only at about 10 am in the morning. Thankfully, the jam was not as bad as we anticipated and we were able to clear both customs in under 2 hours.

Since it was very near lunch time, and we had had a long week, we decided to make our first stop a relaxed one – Midvalley Southkey Mall – a mall we were familiar with and was a short 15 minutes drive from the checkpoint.

We had tried multiple restaurants here, and this time we were here for Mr Dakgalbi, which had a 4.8 star review on Google Maps, and the Instagram reels were always showing the amazing cheese reels.

When we arrived, we asked about the hotplates with a ring of cheese around them, and the staff informed us that each outlet has a slightly different menu and each outlet serves its own style of dakgalbi and cheese platter.

We of course ordered the most popular item on the menu.

The Cheese Falls Dakgalbi Set was available in medium (MYR 76) or large (MYR 108). It comprises half a hotplate of dakgalbi, which is essentially Korean spicy stir fried chicken, fried instant noodles and fried rice. The cheese falls down the middle of the plate has two scoops of mashed potato on either side of it.

It’s a good in a very ordinary, comforting way – you can’t really go wrong with instant noodles, rice, and fried chicken. The sweet and slightly spicy gochujang sauce was common throughout the platter, I think they used the same sauce throughout. My only gripe was that it didn’t come hot. I typically expect hot plates to be served sizzling but this was just warm, and the mashed potato on top was room temperature.

While I didn’t find the set spicy, the two little girls have a very low tolerance for spice and we had to order something non-spicy for them. Enter the Chicken Bulgogi Fried Rice.

Again, it wasn’t served hot, but this wasn’t a problem for the kids. It was slightly sweet, and Ms Milo had her usual small serving of it but Ms Milk didn’t seem to particularly like it. She’s entering the phase of a carbs-only diet so she only had rice (she rejected all our attempts to get her to even taste the chicken), and a jelly drink.

My honest opinion – it’s good in a very ordinary way, the sort of quality found in most decent chain restaurants. The price was also very reasonable, just slightly above food court prices in Singapore, which was good for the quality and quantity of food we were served.
